Update 3: Dolphins Whales Orcas Mobulas and more

Hey there! How are you? Happy you are here! It has been a wild nonstop month! Three weeks of ocean safaris with dolphins, whales, mobulas, orcas and more.

An experience we will never forget.

There is so much to share from exploring the land, waterfalls, and camping under the Milky Way to the many creatures of the sea!

Endless jaw dropping coastline, pristine white sand, mountains making the perfect background, and the sound of waves crashing.

So far, on land, it is one of my favorite spots in all of Baja. It is easy to drive to and far enough away from city lights.

Camping on the beach and looking up to the sky was heavy with nostalgia. Brought me back to being a kid. Sleeping under a blanket of stars.

Do you miss the stars? We can all reduce light pollution by turning off our lights at night.

Pro tip, bring treats for the donkeys.

Two hours from La Ventana or one hour from Cabo, a mesmerizing waterfall and natural pools of water wait. If you are up for a nice walk, start early to beat the heat. You can flip a coin and let fate decide your direction. Spoiler alert, it is beautiful in both directions.

The cañon is in a protected biosphere so no dogs are allowed on the hike. However, they are allowed to stay with you in the campsites.

Porter and I LOVE camping in the bed of the truck! It takes two minutes to set up and break down. With our bedding, pillows, and 2 inches of memory foam from home it brings a sense of comfort to the desert. And, I mean with views of the Milky Way, how could you not love it.

My goodness, where do I start?! Every day is like Christmas morning.

One day you may see five species of dolphins including the elusive Risso, mobulas, sharks, 55+ sperm whales, sea lions and more.

The next day you might only see mobulas jumping and a pod of common dolphins. Here, you must be prepared for anything at any time. Just cruising in the bay your captain might spot a spout of air that belongs to a Blue whale !!

Can you imagine seeing the largest whale in the world?! Their heart weighs up to 1,000 pounds = the size of a cow!

One day out of three months I have been blessed to see Orcas. We were able to jump in the water with them. They are ninja torpedoes. You can watch the video here.

A solo baby whale shark. Not a whale, but a shark. The largest shark + largest fish.

A colony of sea lions. These social mammals can swim up to 30 miles per hour!

A small fever of mobula rays. Scientific name is Mobula Munkiana. Commonly called Devil Ray.

Something amazing is happening in this town.

Fishermen, captains, and tour guides are having meetings on how to operate better and keep marine life respected.

They are eager to learn.

Why is this amazing? One, they are gathering voluntarily. I don’t know about you, but it takes months to get RSVPs for major life events.

Two, these men, the fishermen and captains at one point have had to kill sharks to provide for their families.

The list of men with the courage to change their livelihood from shark fishing to be a licensed captain is growing. They want to show people like you and I the whales, dolphins, mobula rays, sea lions, turtles and more.

Their dedication to the ocean as a community is energizing.

Money + guidance are needed. I could not think of anyone better than the guides from Polynesia. Some might say some of the best in the world.

So, I made a call to a friend. I explained the situation of shark fishing and the desire the men have to change and protect the sea and sharks.

He was excited to hear the good and bad news. Best part! He is willing to travel with his team to host a workshop and work side by side with the captains and guides.

That’s right. Porter was in a professional photoshoot for a coffee brand called Bump.

Health update: With me being on the ocean most days, Porter had 3 seizures in 36 hours.

Our vet is amazing and immediately increased his anxiety meds and set up a neurology consult with a vet in Mexico City.

If we like, Porter can have an MRI of his brain.

Despite his health issues. It brings me immense joy to see Porter live his best life.

These are his last years and it motivates me to let him be a dog. Baja is the best place for him to run free, get all the pets, and sniff all the things. He loves to go camping, swim with kids in the ocean, and get scraps of steak from tacos.

From my social media posts, you may have noticed Doug kinda lives at my house now. At first, he would stop by for a treat and run off.

Now he is here 24/7. He sleeps in front of my truck every night. Even when I was gone for two days, I came home and he was right there.

The biggest turning point was when he was sadly hit by a vehicle.

I got him to the vet and Scott paid for the emergency vet bill, antibiotics and pain medication. Doug then spent 5 days on bed rest.

It was during this time he discovered his deep love for air conditioning.

Baja heat is no treat for a husky.

As the departure date inches closer, the thought of leaving Doug brings me to tears.

In another life, I would keep him forever. In this life, as long as I am in La Ventana, I will shower him with love and treats.

I have hope that the next renter will have space in their heart for the dynamic duo of Doug and Lucy.

My heart is full.

It is the low season in La Ventana.

One by one places are closing. Locals are leaving. It is essential to escape the growing heat.

My neighbor Scott left for Australia and all my friends have made their way back to Bermuda.

It is bittersweet.

When I am hit with waves of emotions I embrace them and let the tears flow.

Goodbyes are the toughest part of traveling that few speak about it. For me, the hardest goodbyes are when I am fairly confident I will ever see that person again.

It is a mini grieving process and it is essential to allow the feelings to have their moment. A short moment only. And then, I smile and remember how lucky I am to have had the moments.

Now that I have completed this update, I must focus on where we will live in July. Do we stay one more month in La Ventana? Or do we start camping Baja? To be determined. Story of my life, subject to change at any time.
