Visit St. George's in Bermuda

St. George’s is a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for its cultural and historical importance. When you explore this town, it feels like going back in time. From the historic architecture to endless charming pastel-colored buildings, cobblestone streets, historic forts, and the scenic waterfront.

History

St. George’s is undoubtedly the quaintest area in all of Bermuda. At one point in time, it served as Bermuda’s first capital.

In 1815, the capital was moved to Hamilton.

St. George’s was founded in 1612 and is considered one of the oldest continually inhabited English settlements in the New World.

Places to See

BERMUDA ST GEORGES

The quaint town remains home to Bermuda National Trust Museum and the St. George’s Historical Society Museum, several forts, St. Catherine Museum, many great beaches and restaurants.

Unfinished Church

Unifinished Church BERMUDA ST GEORGES

Construction of the Unfinished Church began in the 1870s as a replacement for the nearby St. Peter’s Church, which was damaged in a storm. While the new church was designed to be grand and imposing, due to various setbacks, including financial difficulties and disagreements, construction was never completed.

Now, a UNESCO site the Unfinished Church serves as a picturesque backdrop for events, weddings, and gatherings, as well as a symbol of resilience and the passage of time in Bermuda’s history.

Rent a bike

Given that St. George’s is so small, I believe the best way explore all of St. George’s is by renting an e-bike or sign up for a tour of the town with Pedego Bermuda.

forts

Alexandria Fort Bermuda St. George's

There are about 90 different forts in Bermuda. Most of them were built in the 17th century by the British. St. George’s has a couple of my favorites, the first being St. Catherine’s. That being said, it is arguably one of the best in Bermuda, also operates as a museum. Well worth the visit, drop in mid-day to enjoy some shade.

Places to Eat

The White Horse is one of my favorites for a seaside brunch or dinner with friends. As well as, The Wharf and Wong’s Golden Dragon.
