Mashpi Amagusa Reserve is a family owned reserve in Ecuador’s Chocó Andino Biosphere Reserve. Here you have the opportunity to see over 250 species offering, including 24 endemic species. One of the best places I have found for birdwatching and photography. Recommend staying here for at least 3 nights.

Please note, this is not a place to see the famous cock-of-therock, to see that bird consider visiting Refugio Paz de Las Aves.

Day Tour

The morning tour starts between 5:30 – 6:30 am. The tour will end just before lunch or you have the option to book an all day tour or an afternoon tour. Like most, the morning tour includes breakfast.

Take a seat in the outdoor dining room of the restaurant and in 90 minutes or less you can see over 50 species of birds here.

Nowhere in the world have I seen so many different types of hummingbirds including the sword-billed hummingbird!

Like all places in Mindo, they put out fresh bananas, sugar water and other fruits for the birds to happily graze all day. You also have the opportunity to see a rare bird named, Indigo Flowerpiercer.

100/10 take a short walk for a big adventure to try and find the tiny, elusive Mashpi glass frog. One of the best experiences I’ve have ever had. They are so tiny, I have no idea how we ended up finding 3 of these glass frogs.

Camp in The Parking Lot

Small to medium size rigs will easily be able to park just past the bathrooms and stay overnight. When it come to big rigs, there is a big lot further back on the property that would fit an RV with space to turn around.

However, the entry to the property might propose a bit of a challenge. Recommend reaching out via Whatsapp before making the long drive.

From the parking lot there is a weak signal of wifi, There are bathrooms with warm showers and a restaurant on site. They also have rooms to rent in the lodge if you would like.

Ecuador and Colombia have more than double the biodiversity of Costa Rica. And for later down the road, Brazil has triple the biodiversity.
