Best Volcano Camping Spots
1 . Santa Ana and Izalco Volcano

Known as one of the most picturesque volcanoes in El Salvador, the Santa Ana Volcano features a stunning crater lake that is a sight to behold. The hike to the summit is challenging but incredibly rewarding.
Less than a 5 minute walk to start the hike to the top of Santa Ana. This hike is a little challenging, it is best to start by 7 am. Weekends are busy.
Explore Cerro Verde National Park
When you camp here, you are nestled among many impressive volcanoes. In addition to Santa Ana you can also enjoy Ilamatepeq, Izalco, and Cerro Verde. This national park is a paradise for nature lovers. There are well-marked trails for hiking, stunning panoramic views, and the opportunity to camp under the star filled skies.
For those looking for a unique camping experience, consider pitching your tent on the slopes of Cerro Verde. The volcano offers several camping areas where adventurers can watch the sunrise over the lush landscapes.
Camp at Casa de Cristal
Large open grassy fields provides parking for any size vehicle. There are trees for shade, hedges line the drive shaped into whimsical animals and other fun things, and of course, many spots for excellent views. Prices are $2.50 per person, per night. Bath/shower for a small fee. Firewood delivered for 5 USD.

2. Laguna de Alegria

Laguna de Alegría is a must-visit destination for those seeking natural beauty and outdoor adventure in El Salvador, making it an ideal spot for day trips, picnics, hiking and camping. It’s a great overland camping spot in Central America to rest and relax. The nights are cool and peaceful.
Hike to the rim of the volcano
There is a short trail that takes 15-20 minutes. It is a great idea to pack snacks and refreshing beverages. Absorb the rich biodiversity, see how many different bird species you can spot and when the sun hits the lake just right, enjoy the vibrant show from mother nature.
Camp in Volcano Tecapa
Large open space with parking for any size vehicle. There are trees for shade, picnic tables, and a coffee cart. Prices are $5.00 per person, per night. Be sure walk the area before driving. There can be quite a few soft sections that would make it easy to get stuck.

3. El Espíritu de la Montaña (IMO Best View)
While you stand here on a Conchagua volcano in El Salvador you’re looking out into the ocean at several islands that belong to Honduras and Nicaragua.
Walk to the viewpoints!
It is possible to park your rig in the parking lots only and walk to all the viewpoints.
Camp in a tent
For the best views, set up a tent on the deck. If you do not have your own tent you can rent one. There are trees for shade, tables, a small tienda with hot coffee and snacks as well as a restaurant with a limited menu.
Prices to enter the national park area: $5.00 at the gate. Once you get to the top and go left you must pay an additional $7 per person, per night.
The drive up, is bumpy, steep and full of switchbacks. Slow and steady with 4Lo, the drive is 100% doable even in a 2WD. Not willing to drive your own rig? No problem, tour buses drop off daily at 4 pm and pick up the next day at 10 am. Prices 40-50 per person per night. Cost includes transportation, tent, mattress, and sleeping bag.

Best Lake Camping Spots
1. Lake Ilopango
Volcanic Crater Lake
Last Eruption: 1880
7 miles long or 11 km
27 sq miles or 70.5 sq km
Lake Ilopango is situated in the caldera of the Ilopango Volcano, which erupted around AD 431. This eruption was one of the largest in Central America and significantly altered the landscape, creating the lake we see today.

2. Laguna Aramuaca
Clear, warm lake looking directly at Volcano Chaparrastique, last eruption was December 2013. It is still an active volcano.
Rest, Relax, and socialize with locals
On the weekends, this is a hotspot. Swimming, cooking, and swinging from the ropes! Ice cold beers and music for all to enjoy.
Camp at an abandoned tourist center
There is plenty of space for small, medium, and large vehicles to camp. Either under the trees or towards the back for an open sky. While I was camping here, the security guard told me it recently sold and repairs were taking place.
There is 24/7 security here, the gate closes at 5 pm. Cost is $1 to enter and $1 per person per night to camp. Recent review state that 1 of the 4 pools has been restored. Looking forward to the progress of this great location.

3. Lake Coatepeque
Lake Coatepeque was formed in the caldera of the Coatepeque Volcano, which erupted around 57,000 years ago. The lake covers an area of approximately 25 square kilometers (9.7 square miles) and reaches depths of around 115 meters (377 feet), making it one of the deepest lakes in El Salvador.

The exact spot is public access to the lake. Expect it to be full of people, music, and food on the weekends. There is always someone here during the day. Ask and you can easily go kayaking, jet skiing or fishing.

Three Hot Rivers
El Salvador is home to several natural hot springs and thermal rivers, often associated with the country’s volcanic activity. This spot is a true wild camping spot. It is close to the Guatemala border and you can find El Salto de Malacatiupán just 3 minutes away.

Hike to the Top!
El Peñón is a popular spot for hiking enthusiasts. The top offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, including nearby volcanoes, mountains, and even glimpses of the Pacific Ocean on clear days.
Camp at the base
YES to these stunning views. Sunrise and sunset are a must. $5 per night to camp. Security leaves around sunset and locks the gate. The short drive up has many deep ruts, clearance and 4Lo recommended.
