Lake Atitlán
Elevation 1,500 meters or 4,900 feet
Welcome to one of Guatemala’s most stunning natural attractions. This beautiful lake is surrounded by majestic volcanoes: San Pedro, Atitlán, and Tolimán, creating a dramatic backdrop that enchants visitors.

Panajachel
Pana is one of 12 villages around Lake Atitlan. As you travel Mexico and Central America, it is easy to recognize that not only this region, but Guatemala as a whole is home numerous indigenous Mayan communities. Within these communities, they are the ones who have maintained their ancestral customs, languages, and vibrant textile arts the most.

Highly recommend taking tours to learn about their rich traditions and if you visit San Pedro, I highly, highly recommend you take a Mayan cooking class with Anita. +502 5824 7440

This camp spot is located at the very end of the road. Big rigs will not fit all the way at the end of the road. However, there is a parking lot about 500 ft from the end of the road that would work perfectly.
In my personal opinion, one of the best public beaches in Pana. When it comes to camp spots in Guatemala when you find a quiet place with no barking dogs, you stay.

Additionally, it is an option to park and camp overnight here at the public beach, right next to the ferry. Camping here is okay, (lots of people and barking dogs) easy, and safe to leave your vehicle, take the water taxis to visit other towns.

When taking a water taxi, always verify the last return time. Water taxis do not operate after dark. Despite being a lake, the sunset seems to activate a change within the lake. A high tide or swell if you will, for these reasons the locals will not operate.

Bahia Atitlán
Camp at Bahia Atitlan, a lakeside resort with large grassy area. Here you can enjoy gorgeous views of Lake Atitlan and the volcanoes San Pedro, Toliman and Atitlan.

On the property you have access to a pool, bathroom, cold showers, and wifi. The hotel has a restaurant and can easily arrange taxis to and from town if you wish.
Pet and big rig friendly.

Mirador Chuich ok’ok’
This location is a family owned mirador and park. On the property you will find plenty of space to relax, BBQ and soak up the volcano views. There is electricity, bathrooms and 24 hour security.
Pet friendly. Tienda. Big rigs will fit. I was told there is a steakhouse on site?

Volcano Pacaya
YES! Absolutely must of a camp spot in Guatemala! There are not many places in the world I can think of where you can drive and camp on lava fields. Spectacular, wild and free camp right in the middle of a dried lava field. 10/10 recommend.

The trek to reach this camp can be carefully completed in 2WD but 4LO is the best option. Clearance … there are plenty of older Toyota and motos making the drive. No shade. Can be hot during the afternoon, but cools off nicely at night. Beautiful sunrise and sunset.

Sergio lives about 500m up the road. When I was solo camping here, he kindly came to check in on me twice a day (in the morning and before sunset) to ensure I had plenty of water and food. He might offer his land to camp, he has water and showers, very kind and caring man.

Playa el Paredón
There are many beach camp spots in Guatemala. A friend from Bermuda recommended this town and then wouldn’t you know it, I ended up at this quaint little beach town with Guatemala friends.

Camp here on the volcanic black sand beaches of Guatemala. At the very end of the road is Boca Barra Hotel, they allow overlanders to pay to camp on their part of the beach — with or without access to the pool. There are bathrooms, showers and two restaurants on site.

Epic sunsets, beautiful black sand beaches, plenty of shade and good people. Sand is HOT during the afternoon. As you can see in the photo of above we were 7 overland vehicles.

Hobbitenango
Hobbitenango is a unique and charming destination located near Antigua, Guatemala. Inspired by the enchanting world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit,” this unique location offers visitors a whimsical experience in a picturesque setting.

Here are some key highlights about this magical place:
- Hobbit-Themed Accommodations: You will find cozy, hobbit-style cottages that blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. These accommodations are a must do, immersive experience, with circular doors and rustic interiors.
- Stunning Views: Situated quite high on the mountain facing west, Hobbitenango boasts breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, valleys, and three prominent active volcanoes.

3. Nature and Adventure: Enjoy 26 different activities such as: hiking, Archery, axe and machete throwing, fair games, 7-hole mini-golf, top of the world swings and more.
4. Café and Restaurant: Hobbitenango has a quaint café, a restaurant that offer delicious local cuisine, a lively beer garden as well as many small vendors offering delicious treats.
5. Social and Community Space: The venue often hosts events, workshops, and activities geared towards building community and celebrating Guatemalan culture. This creates a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for all visitors.

How to get there
Hobbitenango is easily accessible from Antigua, making it a popular day-trip destination for both locals and travelers. Most travelers book a day tour with local companies in Antigua and some drive to the location and park in the lower lot. From the lower lot there is transportation that will that you up to the entrance of Hobbitenango.
Overlanders: It might seem cheesy, but this camp spot in Guatemala is worth the short trip from Antigua. If your vehicle is medium to small with 4WD you may be able to drive to the top on your own. There is a small fee to park and an additional fee to camp overnight.

Note: There are men at the bottom of the hill who will double check that you have 4WD, asses the size of your vehicle and approve or deny the vehicle. If they give you the green light for the steep and narrow climb, they will radio up and let you know when it is clear for you to drive up.
Camping here is chilly at night. By 6:30 pm all visitors will be shuttled back down the hill leaving your camp extremely peaceful. Overall, it’s an ideal spot for a getaway to experience the beauty of Guatemala’s highlands while enjoying a touch of fantasy.

Antigua Camp for Overlanders
Antigua is undeniable a beautifully colonial city. In the early 16th century Antigua was the capital of Guatemala until a series of earthquakes in the 18th century prompted the government to relocate the capital to its current location, Guatemala City.

This Hostal camp spot in Guatemala was the best! Perfect location to use as a home base to go and adventure to the surrounding volcanoes and Hobbitenango. There is space to park 4 small to medium size rigs in the parking lot. The cost to park overnight is Q50 per person.
This allows you to use all of the spaces inside the hostel. Full kitchen, bathrooms, HOT showers, drinking water, games, books, wifi. There is a restaurant and laundry services are available.
